Miss World 2009 and the City of Johannesburg donate
The Tebogo Home for Children in Orange Farm was the recipient of much-needed highly specialised medical cots, thanks to the City of Johannesburg and last year’s Miss World Festival.
The cots were made possible through the Miss World Beauty with a Purpose initiative which is the Corporate Social Investment arm of Miss World, and which raises money for charity projects across the world. The allocating of the resources from last year’s event is done through the City of Johannesburg’s Department of Economic Development in conjunction with The Johannesburg Tourism Company.
Says Tebogo Home Director Phindile Dlamini: “These cots will make an enormous difference in the lives of both the children and the staff. It is an answer to our prayers. We had a shortage of beds and those we had were old. With these state-of-the art cots we will be able to elevate the children. They are also much safer and easier for staff to operate.”
Commented Mr Oupa Monareng, the MMC for Economic Development: “As the City of Johannesburg we have realized that tourism plays a very significant role in our communities, not only by being a catalyst in promoting the destination and creating sustainable jobs, but by also giving back to the communities through the events hosted in the City.”
Lindiwe Mahlangu- Kwele, CEO of the Johannesburg Tourism Company (JTC) says, “By hosting events such as Miss World 2009, we did not only prove to be a world-class city capable of staging a world-class event, but we were also able to promote the country globally. Examples of big events that have recently successfully hosted include: International Public Television Conference, International Federation of Operational Research Societies; World Solar Congress; and Megafest to mention a few. The legacy of such events makes an impact on socio- economic development issues as well as creates employment opportunities, and promotes responsible tourism.”
The Tebogo Home for Children was founded in March 1990 by a group of parents who had children with disabilities. It is licensed by the Department of Health to cater for children with severe intellectual disabilities. The home caters for 35 children between the ages three and 18. It offers stimulation therapy and life skills. Most of the children at the home were abandoned by their parents because of their disabilities. The vision is to maximise the children’s potential and ability to function independently.
